The Short Version

I'm Steve Keith. I've been in the electrical trade for about 25 years. I got my journeyman's card at 21, went out on my own in 2019, and got my master electrician license in MA in 2026. I still pull wire. I still take service calls. But I'm building something bigger than that.

The Long Version

Trade School

I went to trade school as a teenager. Nobody pushed me there. I just knew I didn't want to sit in a classroom forever. I liked working with my hands. I liked the idea of knowing how to do something real.

Journeyman at 21

I got my journeyman's card in 2004. Twenty-one years old. I thought I knew a lot. I didn't. I worked for other people for the next fifteen years and learned what I didn't know.

The Years In Between

Fifteen years working for someone else teaches you things. Some good. Some not. I learned how to run a job. I learned how to deal with customers. I learned how to quote, how to sell, how to eat a mistake and keep going. I also learned what I didn't want: someone else deciding what my work was worth.

Going Out on My Own — 2019

I went self-employed in 2019. I had a truck, a tool belt, and no idea how to run a business. The trade was the easy part. The business was the hard part. I quoted too low. I didn't write things down. I waited too long to get paid. I worked Saturdays because I didn't know how to price emergency work.

Figuring It Out

Slowly, I figured it out. Better quoting. Written scopes. Change orders. Payment terms up front. Systems for the stuff I kept in my head. The work didn't change. The way I ran it did.

Building Something Bigger

Now I'm building Built Not Bossed. Not because I've "made it" — I'm still building. But I've learned enough to help other people avoid the mistakes I made. The judgment is the product, not the physical labor. And there are a lot of people out there who need that.

Why I'm Doing This

Because nobody helped me. Not because nobody would have — because I didn't ask. I didn't know there was a different way. I thought you just worked harder. Turns out you also have to work smarter, and smarter means having systems, knowing your numbers, and not carrying everything in your head.

That's what this is about. Not a course. Not a coaching program. Not a "movement." Just real help from someone who's still in it.

The Honest Part

I'm not claiming I've achieved financial freedom. I'm not telling you I make six figures. I'm still building. I make mistakes. I learn. I share what I learn. If that's useful to you, I'm glad. If you need a guru with a Lambo, this isn't it.
